Drobeta-Turnu Severin is the perfect place to stay if you want to discover Mehedinti County. So we also visited the city to see what it has to offer. The touristic objectives are not that many and are concentrated all in the same area, so you can see them all in half a day – maximum one day if you want to admire them from all angles.
Drobeta-Turnu Severin is the biggest city in Mehedinti County, Romania.
It was a strategic point for the Romans, and ended its role as a garrison in 602. In the Middle Ages the Severin fortress was built by the Hungarian Kingdom and later destroyed in 1526 by the Ottoman Empire. And in 1883 the town of Turnul Severin was re-established by the first ruler of the Romanian Country, Alexandru Dimitrie Ghica. These are just a few of the historical moments that have left their mark on the city.
The foot of Trajan’s Bridge and the Medieval Fortress of Severin are unquestionable proofs of the past.
In the center of the city there are the following tourist attractions: the Water Castle, Traian’s Bust, Decebal Bust, Kinetic Fountain and Theodor Costescu Cultural Palace.
The Radu Negru Hall was built at the beginning of the 20th century in Radu Negru Square, a commercial center that is still in use.
The Iron Gate Region Museum was in renovation for 7-8 years and reopened in December 2017. Tickets: 5 lei / student / student; 10 lei / adult
We chose to stay in Drobeta-Turnu Severin because it offered us a perfect starting point to visit the entire area. We stayed at the Continental Hotel because it is placed on the Danube shore (being one of the nicest hotels in the city). Cezar loves looking at sunrise, so we were lucky to receive a top-floor room with a view to the Danube River.
The room was large and spacious, with a wall almost entirely made of glass, to enjoy a dreamlike view. The furniture and the bathroom were quite old but were well maintained and functioned smoothly. Among the only “problems”, to say so, it was that before us there were smokers, so the room still smelled bad enough when we checked in, but we solved it with an open window and air freshener from the store.
At this aspect we were very disappointed. Meal time is the most awaited moment of the day for us, but we did realized (after some attempts) the fact that in this area food is not very tasty. And on several occasions we preferred to get food from the supermarket.
The only special treat you can find in this area due to the Serbian influence is the Pljeskavica.
