The Christmas Market in Sibiu 🎄

Sibiu is one of our favourite cities in Romania, visited both summer and winter. For this reason, we can say that the holiday “clothes” it is wearing for Christmas time, suits it. If you like Christmas (it’s hard not to like it) then you have to come at least once to the Christmas Market in Sibiu.

When can you visit the Christmas Market in Sibiu?

As the name implies, the fair is held during the winter holidays. In 2019 the Sibiu Christmas Market is open between November 15, 2019 – January 3, 2020. So you must hurry a bit if you want to enjoy it. At its opening, on November 15, there were almost 10,000 people present.

Does the Sibiu Christmas Market compare with those in Europe?

The Christmas Market in Sibiu is one of the most beautiful fairs in Europe, being mentioned in almost every top. The ones from About Time Magazine in the UK ranked it first.

For this reason, we can say that the Christmas Market is to European standards and you will not be sorry that you would visit just this one.

What can you see at the Christmas Market in Sibiu?

In short, there are so many things to see that you will forget how time goes by. We visited for a few hours this year and it felt like a few minutes. The fair is attended by over one hundred exhibitors, you have an outdoor skating rink, a big wheel, a carousel and the Santa’s house.

The fair is well organized so it is easy for you to orient yourself. There are specially organized areas to serve a traditional Romanian winter meal, mulled wine (you can find it everywhere), and gingerbread. We arrived here with our bellies empty and we cannot say that we have regretted it. The food was delicious and the queues quite small, although we think that when it is crowded you have to have some patience to stay in the queues.

Besides fresh-cooked food, at the fair, you can also buy products made by locals to enjoy the delicacies at home. Cheese, smoked meat, sausages and everything you can think about you will find here, directly from the producer.

Also, you will find houses filled with Christmas ornaments, wreaths, jewellery, Christmas decorations made of wood, beautifully carved candles and so on.

If you get bored, you can go skating or ride in the big wheel, or if you have children you can let them in the carousel.

How do you get to the Sibiu Christmas Market?

In Sibiu, you can reach with almost all means of transport. The greatest flexibility is offered by a personal/rented car, which you can park close to the city-centre, and then walk a bit to the fair.

If you come to visit Romania, then it is good to know that Sibiu also has an international airport. For this reason, it is advisable to look for direct flights to Sibiu, as it is not obligatory to go through Bucharest (where the main airport of the country is located). Some examples of direct flights to Sibiu: Munich, Frankfurt, Vienna, Stuttgart, Dortmund, Madrid, London, etc.

If you choose to come by train, the train station is a few minutes walk from the Old Center.

Tips:

  • Don’t show up at the fair with a full stomach or without an appetite
  • If you want to buy gifts, it would be advisable to have a bag with you to make it easier. And most importantly to reduce the plastic waste.
  • Pay attention to your pockets and all the valuable objects. We have seen enough people that seem to not be there for the holiday spirit. The police are present at the fair, but their mobility is limited in the crowd.
